Provenances
Search documents by names of places indexed as provenances for persons present in the sources. Since provenance was an important element for the characterization of personal identity in the period, it constitutes an integral part of the category of names; for this reason in its treated in this context and not in the index of places.
Personal appellations derived from geographical origins, such as pisano, pisani, are included in the provenance index. In exceptional cases, however, an original provenance takes on the function of a nickname, as in the case of Niccolò, Pisan citizen, called Sardo, for whom Sardo has been indexed as a nickname.
Note further that when the provenance becomes the principal element indicating that a person appertains to a family clan, as in da Uzzano and da Rabatta, it takes on the importance of a surname and is therefore indexed in that category.
